We posted on our Facebook page:
What is your method to ensure that you are drinking safe, clean water in an emergency situation?
Some comments we received:
Comment #1: Without any “modern equipment” with me, I would either strain with my shirt or some other material and boil it or, filter it with some sand, rock, and charcoal (burnt wood) then boil.
Comment #2: Boiling and backpacking filter. Remember, boiling and tablets do not get rid of toxins/chemicals! Kill the pathogens and filter!
Comment #3: I have bleach on hand, but if push came to shove I would construct a sand/charcoal filter, stain the water through it a couple times and boil the water.
Comment #4: My method for ensuring water is sterile? Boil it. Boil it for a minimum of 10 minutes no matter where you are will ensure the water is safe to drink. Filters do NOT take the place of purification. Filters are ONLY used to remove foul tastes and odors, making it more palatable.
Comment #5: I’d like to say I’ve noticed alot of “out in the wild” comments. If you are stuck in the city – cap off the water heater to so no water gets it and us your tank as a back up.
