(Before It's News)

I spent last night watching two teams NFL teams battle for a chance to not make the playoffs.  While the game did have some highlights what peaked my interest was a pathetic attempt by announcer Bob Costas to interject his anti-gun propaganda onto the national stage.  During halftime Bob took some time to address the recent tragedy that unfolded in Kansas City this past week, when Chief’s linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend and then himself with a handgun.  Bob wrapped up his comments by paraphrasing an article written by columnist Jason Whitlock, see the video here.

Our current gun culture, Whitlock wrote, ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead. Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it. In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.

So there you have it. Bob should spend some time reading up on the facts as to whether or not guns truly do enhance our safety or prevent crime.

Myth: Private ownership of guns is not effective in preventing crime

Fact: Every year, people in the United States use guns to defend themselves against criminals an estimated 2,500,000 times – more than 6,500 people a day, or once every 13 seconds. Of these instances, 15.6% of the people using firearms defensively stated that they “almost certainly” saved their lives by doing so.

*Firearms are used 60 times more often to protect lives than to take lives.*

Fact: The number of times per year an American uses a firearm to deter a home invasion alone is 498,000.

Fact: In 83.5% (2,087,500) of these successful gun defenses, the attacker either threatened or used force first, proving that guns are very well suited for self-defense.

Fact: The rate of defensive gun use (DGU) is six times that of criminal gun use.

Fact: Of the 2,500,000 times citizens use guns to defend themselves, 92% merely brandish their gun or fire a warning shot to scare off their attackers.

Fact: Less than 8% of the time does a citizen wound his or her attacker, and in less than one in a thousand instances is the attacker killed.

Fact: In one local review of firearm homicide, more than 12% were civilian legal defensive homicides.

Fact: For every accidental death (802), suicide (16,869) or homicide (11,348) with a firearm (29,019), 13 lives (390,000)119 are preserved through defensive use.

Fact: When using guns in self-defense, 91.1% of the time not a single shot is fired.

Fact: After the implementation of Canada’s 1977 gun controls prohibiting handgun possession for protection, the “breaking and entering” crime rate rose 25%, surpassing the American rate.

Here’s the deal, last week a little girl lost her parents and two sets of families lost a loved one.  Recognizing this what Bob should have done is acknowledge the loss respectfully and moved on, leaving the debating and politics for the talking heads.  Instead he felt the need to piggyback onto the tragedy in order to tell all of us just how bad and dangerous guns are, how classy.  While up on his soapbox he further alluded to the assumption that if Jovan had not owned a gun this would not have happened.  While that *might* be true there are always two sides to every coin.  Maybe if NFL safety Sean Taylor would have owned a gun (instead of a machete) he would have been able to protect himself and would still be with us today. Sean played for the Redskins and was shot and killed during a home invasion in 2007, he too left behind a little girl.  As Sean Taylor unfortunately found out, the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.  More restrictive laws with respect to gun ownership will only serve to remove guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens while emboldening criminals in the process.  For proof of this one only need look towards Australia and Great Britain, countries where crime rates have risen substantially since oppressive gun control laws (or outright bans) have been enacted.

While Bob Costas is entitled to his opinion he chose the wrong place and time to set about expressing it.  A simple “our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved” would have sufficed but he just had to further his own agenda, and by doing so he only succeeded in showing the world how misinformed he truly is. I felt the need to set the record straight, and I’m quite sure the outrage over his remarks have only begun.  Bob Costas: C’mon man.
