While other people were more concerned about granite counter tops and having the latest Lexus in the driveway, you have been stockpiling food. While others were telling you that it could ‘never happen in our lifetime’ you’ve been ensuring you have plenty of water available. While others were more concerned with buying the latest fashion trends, you’ve ensured you have proper rugged clothing and shelter options.
Now TSHTF and many of those sheeple are dead. But some have survived, and they’d found you, and they’re asking for food and shelter and medecine.
What do you do?
This question was inspired by the poll of the day over at The Survivalist Blog .net. I haven’t really thought of it, but it is a very good question as to what to do when beggars come calling.
I thought about it and I felt I wouldln’t do the same thing for everybody. So I split it into three groups as follows:
The Gun Ninja’s or Road Warriors
These are the scum element of the earth. These are guys who prep only by stocking up on guns or ammo. Or maybe people who were in the criminal element before TSHTF. The only answer they will accept is yes, or they will take it by force. Force is the only thing they understand and you have to be prepared to repel them by force. These are the worst kind of beggars because they aren’t really beggars, they are criminals. They may go away and then raid your stock at night or they may just try to take it right there and then. The answer to them is no, and have the group be prepared to defend themselves immediately.
The ‘Stray Cats’
The stray cats are people who aren’t necessarily violent but will beg and plead and whine constantly. The worst mistake you will ever make is giving them food. These people don’t work, probably haven’t ever known an honest days work and will consider getting food for their begging a reward and will consider you a source of food. Give them a scrap and they will never leave you alone. These people are likely to be surviving elements of the ‘me’ generation – lifetime welfare recipients, people who abuse the social system and the like. They will never be anything but leaches and they will never leave you alone.
The Good People
There will be people who are down on their luck. They ran out of food. They got robbed. They are desparate. But they can also be good allies. Give them the things they need if you can spare it, and they might just do the same for you sometime. Even better, you may have just found a new friend or ally. Maybe you’ve just added a doctor to the group. Or someone who knows how to make water filters. They will give back what they get. You need to find people like this. The more people like this you can find the better off your survival odds will be. This is a give and get situation.
So how will I know who is who? Some will be pretty obvious like the gun ninja. Some will be less so. Some people who you peg as good people may be stray cats, and vice versa.
In the end, you just have to go with your gut and take the chance, then deal with the consequences. That’s life, take it or leave it.
