(Before It's News)

2013-07-01 12.28.40Since I was a child, I have had the unfortunate requirement to wear glasses or contacts. This was due to a kid in school who decided throwing rocks at someone was a good thing. On one occasion, I got hit in my left eye. The next day, I got a repeat hit in my right eye. Over time, my eyesight diminished forcing me to wear corrective lenses.

As a prepper, I have backups of my contacts and of my glasses. I am currently looking into getting laser surgery as a reprieve.

This weekend, I had the “pleasure” of getting something in my eye and it wedged under my contact. I went to the cabinet, retrieved the eye wash and flushed my eye. But what if you don’t have eye wash on hand? Having to deal with the pain is bad enough but if the foreign matter stays in your eye, it can cause real damage.

I have a solution! Yes, pun intended.

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon of salt – a packet of salt from a restaurant is 1/2 teaspoon on average

That’s it. I prefer to make the water a little warm as it helps dissolve the salt and it feels better in my eyes. Keep in mind this is only an eye wash and does not provide a cure for ailments. If problem continues, seek emergency medical help immediately.

Now that you have your solution, there is an easy way to administer the fluid.

  • Take a plastic bottle, preferably a water bottle.
  • Cut the top off about 3″ from the cap.
  • Save the top as that is the “eye cap”.
  • Ensure it is cleaned really well with soap and water and rinsed just as well.

Place the mouth of the bottle over the troubled eye and gently pour the solution into the edge of the top. This will focus the solution into the eye without splashing all over the place.

All that’s left is rinse and repeat as often as needed to get the foreign object out of your eye.

I hope this little backwoods medicine works for you as well.

Until then,

Use your instincts to survive
