(Before It's News)

mqdefaultI have seen all sorts of websites –prepper and otherwise, showing the miraculous chemistry of the Mountain Dew glowstick.

I see this the most on aggregated posts “10 amazing camping tricks” or “20 DIY Prepper Projects” and the like, but it is also frequently found on pinterest.

The directions to make a bottle of mountain dew glow are simple:

  • Cautiously pour out all but one-quarter inch of Mountain Dew into a glass
  • Add a very small amount of baking soda to each pop bottle
  • Add three capfuls of hydrogen peroxide

What they do not tell you is that you also need to break open a glow stick and poured the “glow stick juice” into the pop bottle to make it glow in the dark.

I love diy projects, especially the chemical ones – but I believe in the concept of “Trust but Verify” – before I stake mine or my family’s life on a prepper tactic I want to try it for myself.

That is why I do all the assorted projects – I am trying to see for myself if the cool thing I just read actually works. (They don’t always work).

If I see a prepper site telling how easy it is to make a mountain dew bottle glow, then I know that they are just spreading stuff around that they cut and pasted from some other site.

Bottom line: Don’t trust any website, any book, any idea, or any person without trying it yourself.
This includes mine, because I am the first to say, I don’t have all the right answers. Heck, sometimes I don’t even have the right questions…
