(Before It's News)

“What do experienced campers/backpackers use if a filling was to fall out during a long hiking or camping trip? Are there any materials to use to repair and replace a filling? Also is there a super glue that can be safely used to close up cuts and wounds where a band aid or bandage is not enough?”

Top Facebook Comments:

  • Super glue was meant for battlefield surgery. That was the original intent. We use it all the time, and you can, as others have said, purchase dental stuff at the store.
  • Super glue originally was called surgical glue.
  • Super glue was developed as a field dressing first before it was later put out as a glue. Yes it’s safe but as said above, clean out the wound well first.
  • I know of someone who used pine resin and it lasted where his filling was for 15 years. You can buy dental first aid kits though..
  •  I’ve used pine resin as filling. It also has antibacterial properties, so it’s a double advantage. although it leaves a bit of resin taste in the mouth.
  • Melted candle wax. No super glue! You might have to re- open the wound to clean it better..
  • You can buy a mix at most drug stores. Keep it in your pack if you’re worried.
  • Oil of cloves.
  • “Band Aid” came out with their version. It’s basically the same thing, but more expensive. For fillings, they have emergency dental kits that sell filling replacements.
  • Also, if a bandaid or bandage isn’t enough, might need stitches… And for that, you should have a dual purpose item in your bugout bag- fishing line. ….it’s a lot less likely to encourage infection than using thread.
  • Most stores carry medical grade super glue for sealing cuts. Regular super glue will work in a pinch but not recommended.
  • My wife uses just regular super glue to close up wounds and to fix fillings. I know its not that healthy to use regular super glue, but it works and she does.
  • Surgical glue may be purchased at most drug stores. I carry it with me when camping.
  • There’s always cauterizing too, especially for really horrific wounds. The more ya know, the less ya need for sure.
  • Den-temp is good. If you want it last longer, look into IRM – intermediate restorative material. It is a powder and liquid that you mix together. It lasts much longer then Den-temp.
  • Super glue works well for cuts, particularly smaller cuts. I use the gel, and apply it across the wound, not the length of it, to allow for drainage. Steri-Strips are also much better than butterfly closures, and are pretty cheap. Between that and some super glue, you can handle most wounds.
  • I carry a dental kit on extended trips it includes temporary filling.
  • I know you can buy temporary filling stuff at a pharmacy. Its supposed to be good till you can reasonably get to a dentist. As for the glue. Yes, I know people use it, but I don’t know if its safe too.
  • Dentemp is used for temporary filling. U can use super glue to seal a cut. The gel works best but don’t glue your fingers together. Also make sure you wash and sterilize the cut with Hydrogen Peroxide or Bandaid Anticeptic. If you don’t have that you can always use whiskey of some type. Make sure it is washed out and sterilized well because if you don’t the super glue will seal in the bacteria causing an infection.
