Washington DC - -(Ammoland.com)- On March 6 2015, just days after Democrat lawmakers relaunched a push to expand background checks to gun shows, President Obama did his part by saying, “There are neighborhoods where it is easier for you to buy a handgun… than it is for you to buy a fresh vegetable.”

Breitbart News previously reported that Representative Mike Thompson (D-CA) and other Democrat lawmakers stood with Gabby Giffords on March 4 2015 to renew the push for expanding background checks to gun shows as a way of “stopping violence.” Gun shows are one of the Democrats’ favorite boogeymen, and the mere mention of them is intended to arouse fears of lawless men buying guns without the government’s knowledge.

So Obama made his contribution to this dialogue by laughing–as if in shock–while telling the audience at Benedict College in South Carolina that “our homicide rates are so much higher than other industrialized countries, by like a mile, and most of that is attributable to the easy, ready, availability of firearms, particularly handguns.”

In C-SPAN’s video of the speech, Obama then mentioned “common sense gun safety laws, like background checks,” the very gun control measure Representative Thompson, Gabby Giffords, and others are pushing now.

Obama said: “We have tried as much as we can administratively to try to implement background checks… [and] crack down on the illegal use of firearms, particularly handguns.”

He added:

As long as you can go in some neighborhoods and it is easier for you to buy a firearm than it is for you to buy a book, there are neighborhoods where it is easier for you to buy a handgun and clips than it is for you to buy a fresh vegetable, as long as that’s the case, we’re going to continue to see unnecessary violence.

What Obama didn’t mention is that the neighborhoods about which he speaks are largely in Chicago and other heavily gun-controlled cities where the criminal element proves the impotency of every gun control law by maintaining a black market that background check supporters don’t even pretend to infiltrate, regulate, or erase.
