1. When Will I Be Able to Install It?

Pennsylvania law requires that ignition interlock devices must be installed for one year beginning when your license is reinstated.

Thirty days before your license can be reinstated, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will mail you an application for a provisional ignition interlock device license and a list of ignition interlock providers.

You must have the device installed by a licensed provider before you can receive your provisional license.

2. How Much Does Installation Cost?

You may have your ignition interlock device installed by any approved vendor in the state. Prices and fees may vary depending on the vendor.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation estimates that the approximate cost to lease an ignition interlock device for the required year is about $1,200.

If you don’t believe you can pay for the ignition interlock system, you may apply for an economic hardship exemption by proving your income is below 200% of the federal poverty level.

3. What Happens If I Don’t Install One?

If you are stopped while driving a vehicle which does not have an ignition interlock device during your one-year probationary period, you may face the following penalties:

• A fine of $300 to $1,000;
• Up to 90 days in jail; or
• At least 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine (if your blood-alcohol level is above 0.025%).
