RALEIGH, N.C.–For the second year in a row, Myers Bigel Sibley & Sajovec, P.A. (Myers Bigel), the largest independent patent law firm in North Carolina, has been ranked in the top two in the country for quality patents in the consumer electronics/discretionary category by IAM/Ocean Tomo PatentRatings®.

In addition, attorneys Mitch Bigel (electronics/computer) and Alice Bonnen (biotechnology) have been named to the IAM Patent 1000 2013 – The World’s Leading Patent Professionals, a respected industry guide to leading private practice patent professionals and firms in the world’s key jurisdictions.

“The continuity in the quality of patents we have produced for clients over the years throughout all our practice areas is a definite source of pride for our talented legal team,” David Purks, Myers Bigel managing partner, said.

At the same time that the firm is ranked second in the consumer electronics/discretionary category by IAM/Ocean Tomo PatentRatings, it is also ranked 13th overall across all industries. Ocean Tomo PatentRatings uses a patented method to calculate the relative quality of all utility patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) since 1976 on the basis of more than 50 independent and objective factors. The IPQ score represents a numerical measure of patent quality and potential value with a median score of 100 for US issued patents.

Ocean Tomo PatentRatings is the official ratings partner to Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) Magazine, publisher of IAM Patent 1000 2013 – The World’s Leading Patent Professionals, which determines its list of attorneys based on positive feedback from peers and clients with knowledge of their practice and the market within which they operate.

In being named to the 2013 list, Mitch Bigel and Alice Bonnen were recognized for, “their exceptional skill sets and profound insights into patent matters” according to the publication. Specifically, Bigel, called a, “mentor and one of the top IP names in North Carolina” was praised for his “excellent business mind, and that translates very well when it comes to advising clients.”

Bonnen drew praise for her focus on prosecution work in the biotechnology sphere in which she has superior technical credentials, with a peer attorney stating, “She really focuses on quality, so we don’t hesitate to recommend her in the event of a conflict of interest.”

Bonnen’s technical background includes a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University and Master of Science degree from the University of Minnesota (Plant Physiology). She earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Plant Pathology from Michigan State University, with doctoral research focused on mechanisms of disease resistance in Curcurbitaceae. Bonnen received her Juris Doctorate from Wake Forest University; is a member of the North Carolina Bar; and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

With a practice centering on electronics, software and communications technologies, Mitch Bigel has been practicing patent law since 1982, including experience as a patent agent, corporate patent attorney and intellectual property law counsel for IBM Corporation.
