Tunisia says it has plan to open its consulate in Damascus, asking the Syrian government to reopen its embassy in Tunis.
“We will not have an ambassador there (Syria), but Tunisia will open a consulate or put in place a charge d’affaires, and a Syria ambassador is welcome to Tunisia, if Syria wishes so,” Foreign Minister Taieb Baccouche told reporters in Tunis on Thursday, without giving any dates for the move.
A consular presence in Syria would help Tunisia find out information about the 3,000 Tunisians who have left to fight alongside the ISIL Takfiri terrorists in Iraq and Syria and who may return home to carry out terrorist attacks, the minister added.
Tunisia, the birthplace of pro-democracy protests across North Africa and the Middle East, severed diplomatic ties with Syria a year after the January 2011 revolution in the North African country which overthrew its Western-backed dictator, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011. The violence fueled by [terrorist] Takfiri groups, including ISIL, in Syria has claimed the lives of over 215,000 people since March 2011, according to reports. New figures show that over 76,000 people, including thousands of children, lost their lives in Syria last year.
Over 3.8 million Syrians have left their country since the beginning of the crisis. More than 7.2 million Syrians have also become internally displaced, according to the United Nations.[Note: Syria entire population is about 23 million, to get a sense of the devastation thanks to "let's try to pull another regime change" antics]
