Real ID’s Real Problem–How Are The States Going To Fund It?

The Secretary of State`s Office says the state needs to find more money to cover the costs of the Real ID Act. Officials say the standardized, uniform, national ID requirements could cost 150-million dollars over three years. Secretary of State Jesse White says he doesn`t know where the money will come from. White says he has no power to change fees, or raise money, but says lawmakers do. His office says the legislature may be asked to raise the cost of license plates to cover Real ID costs. No one is saying how much, or when. The Governor is expected to include 20-million dollars in this year`s budget for Real ID costs. But the state will have to find all of the money by 2013. MORE
