I find that I am rarely surprised by the products out there to help us, as a community, manage diabetes. I have found that lately I am running into new pumps in airports and even saw a picture of this cool insulin port, called an i-port, in a magazine at our Endocrinologist’s office. The web site says the product is available in Canada and not the US. It is literally like an infusion site that you inject into. Genius.
A week ago…at Joe’s quarterly Endocrinology appointment…
As we sat in pre-exam exam room…
Wait..
Is that what you call that? … the room where they do the height, weight, blood pressure, and A1C poke? Anyways the pre-exam~exam~room~examiner~guy asked Joe if he had any allergies.
Joe’s dead-pan response “yeah, my mother.” (little troll)
Then I got to thinking about this so-called allergy to me and what it would mean to be “allergic” to me in a pancreatic sort of way. Type 1 Diabetes is essentially an allergic reaction and a subsequent attack of one’s immune system on their beta cells. What would we call an allergy to me? I am Joe’s Chief Pancreas In Charge. Parents and loved ones of Diabetics are called Type Awesome’s or Type 3′s. Would we call Joe’s new disorder Type 1 Diabetes complicated by Type Awesome Diabetes?
For the record, his allergy is in his head. An A1C of 6.5% cannot materialize without some assistance from this Type Awesome.
