Warning: Extreme winds, tornados, hail, t-storms, rain, flash flooding is expected today in the Great Lakes More severe thunderstorms are expected this afternoon across a large swath of the Midwest, including areas hit Monday morning by a powerful line of storms known as a derecho.
Winds over 70 mph battered parts of South Dakota, southern Minnesota and northern Iowa as the derecho, a long-lived squall line of severe thunderstorms, roared through Monday morning before weakening over southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois shortly before lunchtime. Here is a sampling of reports:
- One person was injured near Hayes, South Dakota, when wind gusts measured at 122 mph rolled a camper, moved an office building and destroyed grain bins, according to a report from the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. local time.
- A hangar was destroyed and planes were damaged at an airport near Sheldon, Iowa from winds gusting up to 95 mph. Damage was also reported on the north side of the city by a local emergency manager.
- Power poles were downed in Algona, Iowa.
- A wind gust to 72 mph at Sioux Falls Regional Airport; wind gusts exceeded 50 mph for over an hour.
- A mesonet station near De Smet, South Dakota, clocked an 81 mph wind gust, as did Pierre Regional Airport in the state’s capital.
- A high school in Independence, Iowa, clocked a 93-mph wind gust.
- Several reports of major damage to agricultural facilities across northern Iowa, including a chicken farm and a hog confinement building.
