Powerful Storm System To Impact Central United States; Blizzard and Tornadoes In Forecast
A powerful mid-latitude cyclone will develop over the Central United States overnight tonight and peak on Wednesday, bringing areas of blizzard conditions, heavy rain and flooding, high winds, and even a tornadoes, that of which could be a feature small-scale tornado outbreak. Read on for details …
A surface low developing overnight tonight will up the wind gust across the region, gusting from 30-40 mph at times … and as the cold air is sucked southward the snowfall will begin by Wednesday morning in the warning area. Heavy snowfall with reduced visibility due to blowing snow will hit, with NE CO/NW KS seeing it first, spreading into NE through the rest of the day.
Accumulation is expected to be highest in SW NE, NE CO, with anywhere from 5-10″ of snowfall … with 2-5″ of snowfall for the rest of the area in the warning zones into NW KS and the far eastern warning zone in Nebraska.

The dryslot will impact the Central/Southern Plains from Kansas into Oklahoma, centering Central/Southern Kansas over the day on Wednesday. Dry and gusty wind conditions will be likely for those areas, including Wichita. Gusts of 40-50 mph and in some locations a bit higher will hit … so these could be damaging at times. The winds will be west to east, so crosswinds on the interstates will be likely. Be careful with high profile vehicles. Oklahoma will have 30-40 mph wind gusts across the entire state.
The associated front will develop across the IA/MO/AR regions over the day on Wednesday. Instability is high enough to warrant severe thunderstorms along the front. The model here at National Weather Force shows tornado dynamics for the southern half of IA, Northern MO, and into West/Northwest IL with severe storm dynamics in Chicago to Southern WI being detected. Areas north of Central IA will be in the flood zone. Because the mid-level shear is highly favorable, discreet supercells are likely with no merging … and because of this, strong tornadoes are going to be possible in Southern IA and Northern MO, along the IA/MO border at the center-point of the dynamics.
