El Nino is raging as a conveyor belt of storms takes aim at California. So while the El Nino shuffle continues, a polar vortex will make an appearance, by dropping down grabbing hold first of the Northern Plains and Mid West, then stretching across into the Northeast. It’s coming says accuweather. A polar vortex will spin like a giant wheel, sending reinforcing shots of cold air, from January 10 through the 16th or so. It’s going to be so cold in Minneapolis on Sunday, they’re saying it could be the coldest temperatures ever during the playoffs .

Weather Channel- January’s reputation for frigid temperatures will be on full display by this weekend in the nation’s midsection as a widespread blast of arctic air begins to take hold of the region. The air mass responsible for the incoming plunging temperatures will originate from above the Arctic Circle near the North Pole, as the animation below illustrates. The below animation runs from Jan 4th through the 10th.

Accuweather- During the middle of January, a brief shift of the polar vortex will direct waves of cold air southward and could raise the chance of snow in the central and eastern United States that have experienced little cold or snow thus far this season.
The pattern of cold air coming and going will continue be a theme for January.
Following the arctic blast around the Great Lakes and Northeast states from Sunday to Tuesday, temperatures will trend to above-average levels over much of the Central and Eastern states for a several-day stint.
The mild air will reach a peak over the northern Plains on Friday, the Midwest on Saturday and the East on Sunday.
Temperatures will peak in the middle 30s F in Minneapolis, the lower 40s in Chicago, the upper 50s in Washington, D.C., and near 60 in Atlanta. However, the warmup will be of short duration.
Arctic express poised to ramp up
According to AccuWeather Chief Long Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok, “Blasts of cold air will sweep in over much of the Central and Eastern states next week [Jan. 10-16].”
The polar vortex will shift southward across Canada and set up near Hudson Bay for a several-day stint during the second full week of January.
Even though this setup is not uncommon for January, it will deliver a widespread shock following record warmth during December.
While the core of the cold air with the arctic outbreak during the first few days of January focused on the Northeast, the outbreak next week will first plunge across the Rockies and Plains, before turning eastward.
