A bipartisan group of 25 U.S. Senators has followed the lead of 156 House lawmakers in urging the EPA to waive the federal corn-ethanol mandate.
The group of Senators—13 Democrats and 12 Republicans—sent a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson asking that she take immediate action on the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) waiver to help livestock and poultry farmers deal with severe drought conditions.
The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) applauded the senators for their action. NPPC president-elect Randy Spronk says while there’s nothing the government can do about the drought, it can ease the pressure on corn supplies by granting an RFS waiver–which Spronk says is a tool that was put in the law to address situations such as this drought.
House members last week sent a similar letter to Jackson.
