A Florida man was hospitalized and arrested after his homemade gun fired at his leg.
Manny Garrido, 23, of Lake Worth, decided he needed a gun for his protection. However, as a felon, Garrido was not allowed to possess a firearm. Known as a tinkerer, he figured if he could not buy one, he would make one.
Using the brass tube assembly of an air conditioner gauge, a large nut, springs, and a screwdriver, Garrido took to creating a one-round .40 caliber firearm.
It turns out, one round was all he would need…to seriously injure himself.
He was keeping his homemade gun in his pocket when the one round fired and shot into his leg near his ankle. His father, Manny Pinho, said he came home to find Garrido limping around in the back yard. Pinho urged his son to go to the hospital, but his son was afraid he would get in trouble. In the end, Pinho convinced him to get help. Shortly after Garrido arrived at the JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, a staffer called police to report a shooting victim.
On Sunday, Garrido was arrested and charged with possession of ammunition or firearms by a felon.
Garrido had been arrested in 2011 after officers found prescription pills in his pocket. In April 2011 he pled guilty to felony drug charges, making him a felon and felons are not allowed to buy firearms or ammunition. As of Monday, Garrido remained in Palm Beach County Jail in lieu of $7,500 bond.
Though investigators are unclear how Garrido learned to make the firearm, Pinho guesses his son saw something on the internet.

He should have built a high powered air rifle/pistol. It’s not a “firearm” since it doesn’t use gunpowder or any chemical assist.
