CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Down to Six

World Cup qualifying for teams from North American, Central America and the Caribbean started with 35 countries. Now there are only six teams battling for 3.5 berths to earn a spot in Brazil in 2014.

Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama and the United States are the countries that remain. Starting next February the six teams will play each other twice in a home and home that will go until October 2013. After ten matches, the top three teams in the group will punch their ticket to Brazil. The fourth place team will play a two-leg playoff against the first place team from Oceania in November (likely New Zeeland).

Mexico is currently the team to beat in the continent. Their young players are growing up and building great chemistry together.

The United States struggled in the last phase of qualifying as they continue to rebuild and find the right combination of players.

The other four countries have players that play their club soccer around the world. They have a great home field advantage, which is something that CONCACAF is known for.

There’s a lot of time before matches resume, but it is sure to be an interesting fight to make the 2014 World Cup.
