Director of CDC During MMR/Autism Link Coverup Later Appointed President of Merck’s Vaccine Division

It has recently been learned that the senior scientist for the CDC, Dr. William Thompson, that recently revealed a long-hidden link between the MMR vaccine and development of Autism, had made his superiors aware of the MMR-Autism connection. In a recently discovered email, Dr. Thompson describes the results of a previous study of his, that investigated the potential link between Autism and the MMR vaccination, as being “problematic” in that they showed “statistical associations” between the MMR vaccine and Autism.

This recently released email, was sent from Dr. William Thompson to a Dr. Julie Gerberding who was, at the time, acting director for both the CDC  and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). Dr. Julie Gerberding submitted her resignation from the CDC in 2009. Within this email, Dr. Thompson seems to express concern regarding the “statistical associations” his research team found between the MMR vaccine and Autism:

I will be presenting the summary of our results from the metropolitan Atlanta Autism Case-Control Study and I will have to present several problematic results relating to statistical associations between the receipt of MMR vaccine and autism.

Dr. William Thompson continues to address the issue to Dr. Gerberding in his email:

I’ve repeatedly asked individuals in the NIP Office of the Directors Office why you haven’t responded directly to the issues raised in those letters and I’m very disappointed with the answers I’ve received to date. In addition, I’ve repeatedly told individuals in the NIP OD over the last several years that they’re doing a very poor job representing immunization safety issues and that we’re losing the public relations war.

After expressing his concern regarding the connection between the MMR vaccine and autism, followed by his seemingly disapproving opinion of the NIP (National Immunization Program) directors, he then describes a flattering series of situations in which he feels Dr. Gerberding has been tremendously effective in handling the public relations aspect of disease related crises such as SARS, Monkey Pox, and influenza.  He then goes own to express his opinion to Dr. Gerberding:
