(Before It's News)

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump holds a commanding 23 percent lead among Iowa caucus participants according to the Bloomberg-Des Moines Register poll released Saturday. Ben Carson moves up to second place at 18 percent. Iowa’s barometer-like importance is tied to the middle America state hosting the first 2016 nomination balloting contest.

Trump was rated favorably by 61 percent of likely Republican caucus-goers and unfavorably by 35 percent in the new survey.

The turnabout in numbers has been surprising. Scott Walker, once the frontrunner in Iowa, has seen his support slip to a mere 8 percent —- placing him in a tie for third place with Ted Cruz. Both men appeared stronger contenders earlier.

Jeb! is on life support in Iowa, scoring below Walker and Cruz with just 6 percent. The amnesty and Common Core supporting dynastic Bush has one of the highest unfavorable ratings among the 17 Republican candidates, and is supported by only 16 percent of those who consider themselves establishment Republicans, the group whose favor he has specifically curried.

On the Democrat side, problem plagued Hillary Clinton has lost a third of her supporters since May. The “smartest woman in the world” has Bernie Sanders, a 74-year-old, self-declared Democrat Socialist, nipping at her heels and trailing her by only 7 points — 37-30. The actual melee will occur if the gaffe-prone VP Joe Biden enters the race, as appears more likely. Biden. and his advisors are meeting with prospective donors, organized labor and other major liberal constituencies to assess his potential support and Clinton’s weaknesses in key early states.

The next GOP debate is scheduled for Sept. 16, at the Reagan Library.  Expect the list to constrict further.

This is the attention-grabbing snapshot of the Bloomberg-Des Moines Register GOP polling numbers:
