An armed occupation of a federally managed wildlife outpost in far off Oregon rolled into its fourth day Tuesday, despite the 2 men at the center of the unrest disavowed the protest.

The team, which calls itself the Citizens for Constitutional Freedom, took over the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday. It was vacant at the time because of the holidays.

Armed Protesters In Oregon Vow to Hold Refuge until Demands Are Met

They are actually calling for the release of Dwight Hammond, 73, and his son Steven, 46, 2 ranchers who were found guilty of setting fires that spread to government land. The occupiers have additionally promised to stay in the building until federally owned land is returned “back to the people.”

The ringleaders are Ammon and Ryan Bundy – sons of Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher well-known for another standoff with the federal government in 2014.

The FBI, which happens to be leading the response, stated Sunday night it desires a “peaceful” end to the standoff. Law enforcement officials have not tried to take back the remote building but local schools have shut their doors until next week and locals have been cautioned to keep their distance.

The protesters have stayed at the reserve even after the Hammonds, who turned themselves in at the federal prison in San Pedro, California, on Monday mid-day, did actually disavow the occupation.

The Hammonds’ attorneys stated they plan to appeal to President Barack Obama for executive clemency, but stated that “neither Ammon Bundy nor anyone within his group/organization speak for the Hammond family.”

This emotion was reinforced Monday by the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association, which stated that while it backed the Hammonds “via avenues that are in accordance with the law,” the association did “not support illegal activity taken against the government,” referencing the Bundys’ occupation.

Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward stated that the occupiers were no longer desired in the community.

“The Hammonds have turned themselves in,” he mentioned. “It is time for you to leave our community. Go home, be with your own families and end this peacefully.”

Ammon Bundy told news media on Monday that the occupiers have no goal of committing violence unless the government intervenes.

“The only violence that, if it comes our way, will be because government is wanting their building back,” he stated. “We’re putting nobody in harm’s way. We are not threatening anybody. We’re 30 miles out of the closest town.”

  • I hate these liberal fascist media aholes more than anything! They disgust me so!

  • How can a foreign owned blm own public land in the state of Oregon? By fraud is how. They have no claim and where in the constitution does it say the fed gov. also a foreign owned and controlled corporation can own land?
    More fraud!

Love what the judge said on BIN./alternative/2016/01/public-servants-listen-up-the-people-your-employers-are-speaking-yopu-are-strongly-advised-to-heed-this-message-3271970.html

  • Your looking at the cause of this mess. One man. A County Sheriff. If this Sheriff had performed his paid and sworn Constitutional oath the Hammonds would be at peace. The BLM would go pound salt. The FEDS would be busy with their lives at home. Burns would not be front page. The Bundys would be on their ranch. Justice would be served. The Sheriff would be proud of his actions. The refuge would not be a media campout. One man, a County Sheriff, caused all this with his failure to perform his oath and protect the Hammonds.

The good people of this County it’s time to recall this unfit Sheriff and no longer reward him for his failures with a paycheck. He has failed causing this mess.

  • People need to check their information before they go spouting off about people. Maybe you don’t know it but these people already served their time. The BLM took them back to court to try them as terrorists but didn’t bother to let the jury know that. Double jeopardy and jury tampering by the government. I’m pretty sure that if that type of railroading, life ruining event was happening to you, you might want more truth put out there. Someone that has been through it, is there trying to protect every American’s rights. Trying to get enough attention drawn to the situation that maybe, just maybe the American people will realize what’s happening. Hopefully, American’s are still capable of doing their own research instead of leading information. Now, what, do you suppose, would cause someone that has already been there to go back? Wake up and smell the coffee. Because when it finally is happening to you, it’s too late. Don’t judge before you know.
