Six months after legal issues were raised by federal regulators, X Products announced over the weekend a legally approved Can Cannon design.

“Our new design restores the Can Cannon back to the status of ‘not a firearm’ and ‘not a destructive device’ in the eyes of the law,” the company said in a statement released Friday.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives issued a determination letter last month updating the legal status, according to a document shared by the company. In celebration of the design, the company launched a raffle for five Can Cannons.

The devise attaches to an AR-15 lower receiver and, with the use of blank ammunition, launches soda cans out of the barrel. But last September, the ATF determined that because the Can Cannon could fire live ammo, the attachment would turn an AR into a short barrel rifle. Legally speaking, such an item is prohibited under federal law unless the owner obtains a registration.

At the time, an X Products spokesman told Guns.com that there were an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 Can Cannons in circulation in the U.S.

According to the company’s website, the Can Cannon is compatible with any AR-15 design and retails for around $400.
