Ringling Brothers is phasing out elephants in their Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus events. Elephants will no longer be party of the “Greatest Show on Earth” by 2018, according to Feld Entertainment, the circus’ parent company.
Elephants have been a part of the Ringling Brothers Circus for more than a century. The decision to phase out elephants came amid increasing public pressure by animal rights groups about the treatment of the massive creatures. A total of 43 elephants will be housed at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Center for Elephant Conservation. Approximately 29 elephants currently reside at the 200-acre Florida facility -14 more elephants will be arriving in the near future.
