What are the martial arts? “Martial Arts” means military. So any of the military arts from archery to fencing to empty-hand combat could be categorized as martial arts. Most people, however ,think of karate, judo, tae kwon do or some other Asian system of self-defense when the term is mentioned, An estimated 25 million Americans are practicing or have practiced one of the many martial arts styles taught in the U.S.A.
