(Before It's News)

A week after a Maryland man was taken into police custody, he died of injuries sustained during the arrest.

According to police documents, officers approached Freddie Gray, 25, because he was in an area of Baltimore known to have a high incidence of narcotic-related crime. They had reason to believe Gray may have just been involved in criminal activity. When Gray saw the officers, he fled. The police pursued and apprehended him.

A witness shot this video of the immediate aftermath of the arrest.

As the officers recounted in the police report, Gray did not resist. Officers called for a “paddy wagon” to transport him, and they loaded him in it at 8:54am. Thirty minutes later, police called for an ambulance to come to Baltimore’s Western District Police Station and take Gray to University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Center.

When Gray arrived, he had a broken neck (severing his spine 80 percent of the way), bruised brain, broken leg, and a crushed larynx. He slipped into a coma last week and died Monday of injuries received.

Now people want answers. The six officers involved in the arrest have been suspended, pending an investigation.

“This is a very, very tense time for Baltimore City, and I understand the community’s frustration. I understand it because I’m frustrated. I’m angry that we are here again — that we have had to tell another mother that their child is dead,” Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake told reporters. “I’m frustrated not only that we’re here, but we don’t have all of the answers.” The mayor has promised to “hold the right people accountable.”

CNN reports:

Gray’s death Sunday, following a week of hospitalization, has spurred outrage. At a Monday morning protest outside the Baltimore Police Department, demonstrators co-opted slogans from other high-profile police shootings. They chanted — “Hands up! Don’t shoot!” and “I can’t breathe!” — and carried signs saying, “Stop police terror” and “Black lives matter.”

Sharon Black, one of the rally’s organizers, said police misconduct is routine in Baltimore, and described Gray’s death as the “straw that broke the camel’s back.”

“The police act in an unrestrained and abusive way,” she said.
