In separate meetings Monday, one with all three major Jewish movements and the other with several Jewish lobbying organizations, President Obama attempted to persuade the Jewish community as a whole to back a potential nuclear deal with Iran.
The Hill reported Monday that Obama met with members of the Orthodox Union, the Conservative Rabbinical Assembly, and the Union of Reform Judaism.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the American Jewish Committee, J Street, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, the Anti-Defamation League, and the Jewish Federations of North America were among the lobbying groups who met with Obama.
“There were some folks walking in who support and favor the deal and there were some who have deep, deep concerns about the deal. I don’t think anyone’s fundamental view was changed by the conversation,” an anonymous official told the publication.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 19 to 0 Tuesday on legislation that would give Congress the final say on a nuclear deal with Iran. It now goes to the full Senate for a vote. “I think this puts Congress in its rightful role,” Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., told The Hill after the vote.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters ahead of the vote Tuesday the president would sign the legislation into law. “The president would be willing to sign the proposed compromise that is working its way through the committee today,” Earnest said. “We’re going to have to see how this works its way through the process.”
Assuming it makes its way to the lower chamber, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy signaled he would bring the legislation to the floor. “If [Corker] is able to get his agreement and get it out of the Senate, it is my intention to bring it to the floor of the House and move it,” McCarthy said.
