Since Ted Cruz made his official presidential announcement on March 23, news organizations like The Washington Post and FiveThirtyEight have run articles doubting his “electability” because he is “too conservative.” They believe that he is too far to the right on the issues, and that will cost him voters from independents and fringe Democrats.
Joining Martha MacCallum on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, Cruz didn’t backtrack; he doubled down on his conservative principles and invoked Ronald Reagan. He declared that because Reagan didn’t rush to the “mushy middle” to win his election, Cruz wouldn’t rush to the middle either and said that he sees Conservatives, Independents, and “Reagan Democrats” as his potential voters, too.
“I believe in common sense conservative values. I believe in, for example, live within your means, don’t bankrupt our kids and grandkids, follow the Constitution,” Cruz told MacCallum. “It is only in Washington that those are viewed as radical or extreme views. In the rest of America, those bring people together.”
“Those are values that bring together Republicans, Democrats, Independents and Libertarians…” Cruz added.
MacCallum interjected and asked if he thought he didn’t need the independent voter.
“You absolutely want the Independent voter, and I think the way you win the Independent voter is by standing clearly for common sense values,” Cruz responded. “And interestingly enough, when you stand for principle – when you draw a line in the sand – it does two things: it brings out millions of conservatives but it also earns you crossover votes.”
“Reagan Democrats, the only Republican in 50 years with a group of Democrats named after him, didn’t get it by running to the mushy middle, he got it by standing for the values that make America strong,” Cruz said.
