The above footage includes some amazing time lapse video of the Calbuco volcano that has erupted in Chile’s southern Lake’s Region.
And going by some of the Tweets below it looks like a nuclear bomb has gone off or the gates of hell itself have been opened.
There was little warning as the volcano erupted for the first time in more than five decades on Wednesday. Luckily the volcano has only been spewing ash and there have been no reports so far of lava or hot rocks.
According to AFP over than 5,000 people have been evacuated from a 13 mile (21 km) radius around the volcano. There have been reports that one 21 year old mountain climber has gone missing.
A state of emergency was declared after the initial eruption and a curfew was enforced overnight. The army has also been sent in and air flights in close proximity have been cancelled.
Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet is visiting the affected area on Thursday.
“The ash might damage crops, animal feed, bridges, roads, people’s work routines, tourism and especially their health,” Bachelet said according to AFP.
“We don’t know how the situation is going to evolve. It’s pretty unpredictable.”
The BBC reports that Chile has the second largest chain of volcanoes in the world after Indonesia.
It has about 500 volcanoes that are potentially active.
