Restaurant Owner Decides Enough Is Enough, Does This After Man Digs Through Trash
When a restaurant owner in Virginia Beach saw what appeared to be a homeless man digging through her trash, she decided to take action.
Eleni Fotidou, owner of Zorba’s, a Greek restaurant, tearfully told the story to local CBS affiliate WTKR.
“I never want to see anyone like that,” she said. “No one is allowed in 2015 to go to bed starving.”
“We didn’t quite realize what he was doing at first until, you know, you kinda take a bigger look at him, and you realize that he’s searching for food,” said restaurant employee Samantha McCauley.
Security footage caught the man looking through the trash, and then moments later walking away. A woman who works nearby is seen running up to the man as he is leaving and offering him some bottles of water. He was also offered food, but declined and seemed to become angry.
The restaurant is in a mainly residential neighborhood about 13 miles from the oceanfront that is not frequented by homeless people.
Zorba’s decided to put up signs to let the man know he is welcome to come inside next time.

An Oklahoma restaurant owner made a similar gesture last month, hanging up a sign addressed to the person going through her trash at P.B. Jams. She also invited the person to come inside and receive a “classic PB&J,” fresh vegetables, and a cup of water. No charge. No questions asked.”
Fotidou said her desire to help the homeless man comes from her family’s homeland. “Greece, it’s the home of hospitality,” she said. “We learn to do that. In Greece we are all big families. We always help each other, we always love each other.”
