Watch What Happens When This Fisherman Makes A Record-Breaking Catch In A Kayak

A fisherman in southwest Florida caught what is possibly the largest Atlantic Goliath Grouper in history…from a kayak.

Jon Black of the Crazy Lure Bait and Tackle shop in Cape Coral, Fla., snagged the grouper while filming his Chew On This YouTube program in nearby Sanibel, KPRC reported. In the clip above, Black can be heard screaming excitedly as he tries to reel the grouper in.

International Business Times reported on the incredible encounter:

Black is in his kayak in Sanibel, Florida armed with a custom Barrett rod, an Avett 50w reel for big game, straight cable line and leader with a 18/0 circle hook. Black was using canal tuna as bait when he felt that fateful tug.

Atlantic Goliath Groupers can measure up to 9 feet and weigh up to 900 pounds. There are several videos of these fish pulling people out of boats and you can see the relief — and exhaustion — on the face of anyone who has reeled a grouper onto the boat.

The specific fish Black caught was 83 inches long with a 73-inch girth, according to GrindTV, which also pointed out this particular species has been protected since 1990.

The site also noted that no records exist for kayak fishing or goliath groupers. “One only lists a red grouper and the other lists several smaller grouper species, the biggest of which is 39 inches, leading to the belief that this is likely a record fish,” the site said.
