As he made his official announcement solidifying a 2016 presidential bid, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry had two close friends by his side. Joining him on stage were twin brothers and U.S. Navy SEALs Marcus and Morgan Luttrell. The former is best known for his autobiography, Lone Survivor, which was turned into a 2013 film starring Mark Wahlberg as Luttrell.
Perry has been open regarding the close bond he and Marcus Luttrell have established since their first unexpected encounter in 2007. Just two years after narrowly escaping a Taliban attack that killed three of his fellow SEALs, Luttrell showed up unannounced at then-Gov. Perry’s mansion and asked to speak to him. The two formed a lasting friendship that continued on stage Thursday during Perry’s announcement.
Despite the Luttrells’ public image and their well-known association with Perry, however, their inclusion in the announcement flummoxed several media sources.
Salon’s Katie Halper was one of several reporters quick to admit her ignorance.
“Are those two guys standing behind Rick Perry twin body guards,” she asked on Twitter, “or his twin sons? Or is it trick photography.”
Critics responded quickly and harshly.
Halper was not alone, however, as writers for similarly left-leaning sites like Think Progress and The Nation offered similarly baffled reactions.
Had they waited to hear Perry’s entire speech, however, they would have had no trouble identifying the two bearded men.
Introducing Marcus Luttrell, Perry said: “He is not just a lone survivor to Anita and me. He is a second son.”
