A New Jersey woman was murdered this week by an ex-boyfriend against whom she had a restraining order. She applied for a gun permit just over a month ago.
Carol Bowne of Berlin Township was found dead in her driveway Wednesday night by police. 45-year-old Michael Eitel has been charged with murder and is currently a fugitive being sought by the US Marshals Service task force, the Courier-Post reported.
Bowne, who had a restraining order against Eitel, installed security cameras in her home and applied for a gun permit on April 21. She asked about its status as recently as this past Monday, according to Berlin Township Police Chief Leonard Check:
The application process typically takes two months or more as police collect information on the applicant, including fingerprints and reference checks. We did not get the fingerprint information yet.
The late 39-year-old’s place of employment, the White Horse Pike Salon, was closed Thursday so coworkers could properly grieve. “We’re family,” the salon’s owner, Linda O’Hara, told the Courier-Post. Bowne worked there for over 20 years.
A party had been scheduled in the salon to mark Bowne’s upcoming 40th birthday. She was also going to celebrate with friends in the Dominican Republic.
Bowne’s husband, Roy, died three years ago in a motorcycle accident.
“Court records show Eitel pleaded guilty to a weapons offense in 2008 after being indicted in 2006 on a charge of aggravated assault with bodily injury. He received a five-year sentence for that offense, which neighbors said was related to an assault on a former girlfriend,” according to the Courier-Post.
