One Baltimore activist has turned the recent civil unrest in his city into an opportunity to impose a list of demands on those he dubbed “white allies” in a series of recent Twitter posts. Lawrence Brown, employed as an assistant professor at Morgan State University, initially published his mini-manifesto May 31. One of the original points, however, has apparently since been deleted.
Screen shots of his controversial sixth point live on, though, and have sparked considerable social media reaction nearly a week after it was posted.
The response to Brown’s idea was swift and severe among those who do not subscribe to the idea that whites are inherently privileged based entirely on the shade of their skin.
A few offered some pointed advice for the professor…
…while others could not quite believe someone with his views is allowed to so greatly influence the next generation.
This comment was hardly Brown’s first controversial statement on race. Among his most recent Twitter posts includes one in which he posits the “sheer amount of white-on-black violence, viewed collectively, amounts to what can be called a Domestic War on Black People & Communities[.]”
Brown also recently listed 10 “types of violence inflicted on us,” an apparent reference to the black community. He cited tenuous evidence such as the “obliteration of Black cities” as evidence of his imagined war on blacks.
The besieged professor did take the time to respond to several questions and comments regarding his comment. A number of other users, however, reported that he blocked their accounts from interacting with his as a result of their criticism.
