Two men convicted of murder escaped a maximum security correctional facility in upstate New York, just 20 miles south of the Canadian border, the first time such an instance has occurred in the the prison’s 150 year history.
Richard Matt, 34, and David Sweat, 48, were discovered missing from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., after a routine bed check Saturday morning, ABC News reported. The facility was constructed in 1865.
Matt was serving 25 years to life after he kidnapped and beat a man to death in 1997, while Sweat was serving a life sentence for killing a Broome County sheriff’s deputy in 2002. ABC News explains how they were able to get out:
The prisoners, who were in separate but adjacent cells, arranged hoodies and other clothing to make it appear as if they were in their beds, officials said.
They then escaped through holes in the wall of their adjoining cells onto a catwalk about six stories high, and climbed down, officials said. The men appeared to have power tools in several spots that they used in their escape through tunnels, officials said.
“A search revealed that there was a hole cut out of the back of the cell through which these inmates escaped,” acting state corrections commissioner Anthony Annuci said. “They went onto a catwalk which is about six stories high. We estimate they climbed down and had power tools and were able to get out to this facility through tunnels, cutting away at several spots.”
The fugitives left this photo on their way out of the jail:

A female worker who may have aided the fugitives was interrogated by authorities, according to The New York Post, who noted that it is not a prison guard. “It’s an employee being questioned,” a high level source told the NY Post. The worker has since been removed from her post.
$100,000 has been offered to anyone who has information related to Matt’s and Sweats’ whereabouts. The public has been advised by authorities to be vigilant but also to not apprehend the fugitives.
People have been sharing their reactions on Twitter, which include comparisons to a blockbuster film:
The whole prison break thing here in NY sounds far too much like a Shawshank rendition. Let me guess, it was storming so no one heard.

I wish people would stop comparing the NY prison break to The Shawshank Redemption. Andy Dufresne was innocent. These guys aren’t.

Re: NY prison break, it’s only a true “Shawshank” if you a) are actually innocent and b) crawl to freedom through a sewer main.

Who thinks the two escaped prisoners from CLINTON Correctional prison in NY didn’t have inside help? Hillarys new bodyguards?
