The House of Representatives voted Friday to block federal funding to Planned Parenthood for one year and curb some abortion practices. The bill passed 241-187, largely along party lines.
“Most people think that is common sense,” said Rep. Diane Black, R-Tenn., sponsor of the defunding bill. “If there is reason to investigate, then there is reason to withhold taxpayer dollars during that period of time. The American taxpayer has been clear for a very long time that they do not want federal funds spent on abortion.”
The impact of 10 videos released by the pro-life Center for Medical Progress detailing the sale of fetal tissue and organs by Planned Parenthood was clear during debate.
“If they want to send one taxpayer dime to Planned Parenthood after watching them, shame on them,” said Rep. Blake Farenthold, R-Texas.
“What we’ve learned about Planned Parenthood is appalling, barbaric and indefensible,” said Rep. Keith Rothfus, R-Pa.
“Should we force taxpayers to fund a business that spends its money aborting 327,653 children per year?” asked Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. “Should we force taxpayers to fund an organization whose barbaric practices, as vividly shown in those videos, disregard and devalue the sanctity of the most innocent human lives?”
The first bill would block Planned Parenthood’s federal funds for a year. The other would impose criminal penalties on doctors who don’t try to save infants born alive during abortions.
Planned Parenthood gets around $450 million yearly in federal payments, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
The bills are part of a wider effort to de-fund Planned Parenthood. Many conservative Republican congressmen want to link funding Planned Parenthood with the deadline to adopt a federal budget. President Obama has pledged to veto any bill targeting Planned Parenthood.
