For the first time in its vaunted history, Fox News was the most watched primetime cable channel for an entire quarter.
Propelled by the record-breaking first Republican debate in early August, which drew 24 million viewers, FNC beat all comers including ESPN (despite the beginning of the football season).
Variety reports for the months of July, August and September, Fox averaged 1,952,000 viewers in primetime, versus its closest rivals ESPN-which drew 1,707,000, USA-1,552,000, HGTV-1,480,000 and TNT-1,418,000.
FNC’s numbers were up 10 percent over the previous quarter. More people tuned in to Fox than CNN (814,000) and MSNBC (625,000) combined.
The O’Reilly Factor did particularly well delivering its highest quarter ratings (2,870,000 viewers), since the fourth quarter of 2012 during the presidential election.
As reported by Western Journalism, the presence of Donald Trump has been one of the main factors in an increase in ratings among all the news outlets. For example, Megyn Kelly’s program the Kelly File, reached new ratings highs in August.
Her much publicized feud with Trump sparked at the first Republican debate drew people in. After returning from a 10 day vacation in late August following the debate, 3.1 million tuned in to the The Kelly File. This was “the program’s largest audience of the year and more than the rest of the cable news competition on CNN, MSNBC and HLN combined in the 9 p.m. Eastern Time hour, Nielsen data showed. Kelly was also the cable news leader in the time slot among the 25-to-54 age group most desired by advertisers for cable news programming, scoring 603,000 viewers,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
