In a recent interview, a representative of Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson responded to criticism over the surging candidate’s recent criticism of Islamic extremism.
Armstrong Williams, Carson’s business manager, explained that more Americans – particularly moderate Muslims – should speak out against atrocities committed in the name of Allah.
“If more people were to be as outraged … maybe Americans would begin to believe that you’re just outraged by the loss of human life,” he continued.
Acknowledging the difference between practitioners of Islam and radical terrorists, Williams lamented the former group’s lack of fortitude.
“Yes there is a distinction,” he said, “but the Muslim community should do more of condemnation as well as the media.”
CNN Tonight panelist Rula Jebreal reacted to Williams’ points Monday evening, going so far as to hold Carson and others responsible for any future violence toward Muslims.
She began by declaring that Williams is in “total denial” regarding his impression of Islam.
“Not only that,” she complained, “he’s talking about crimes committed in Iran and Saudi Arabia. What does [sic] Muslims in America have to do with that? Why they [sic] need to be criminalized because of that? Would we ever accept a presidential candidate that would apply the same rules, would say the same things about Jews and black [sic]?”
After implying that Islamophobia is “what is appealing” to today’s Republican base, Jebreal went on to forecast a deadly scenario for which she would hold those critical of radical Islam personally accountable.
“And in the realm of possibility,” she concluded, “in a country that is very armed, that somebody that will be carrying weapon [sic] will go to a mosque tomorrow, or after tomorrow, and will start shooting people. And then these people will have blood on their hands, all of them: Carson, [Donald] Trump and Ted Cruz.”
