A new Bloomberg Politics poll finds that while Donald Trump is still leading the polls in the GOP presidential primary race, Ben Carson is closing in.
In the national survey released on Thursday, Trump garners 21 percent of registered Republicans’ vote, while Carson takes 16, Bush takes 13, and Carly Fiorina nets 11 percent.
A CNN/ORC poll published on Monday had Carson trailing Trump at 14 percent to 24 percent, with Fiorina falling between them at 15 percent.
Fiorina and Carson made the strongest gains since the last Bloomberg Politics poll published a month ago. Fiorina was at 1 percent in August, but is up 10 points thanks to her strong debate performances. Carson jumped 11 percentage points, while Trump has remained steady.
A recent poll that finds 72 percent of respondents think the United States is not as great as it once was could play in Trump’s favor. This sentiment dovetails nicely with the billionaire candidate’s campaign theme: “Make America Great Again.” However, Trump’s unfavorable rating at 40 percent is exceeded only by Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul’s at 42 percent.
Those candidates enjoying the highest favorable rating are Carson at 68 percent and Marco Rubio at 60 percent. Meanwhile, 57 percent of respondents have favorable views of Fiorina and Bush.
The survey also found that 66 percent believe the nation is heading in the wrong direction, which is the highest level since Dec. 2013.
Over one-third, 37 percent, of those polled want a political outsider to be president as opposed to someone who has held office before, with no distinction about whether the former office holder was a U.S. senator or a state governor.
“At some level, it is a risk to elect a person with no experience in government,” said J. Ann Selzer, president of West Des Moines-based Selzer & Co., which conducted the poll for Bloomberg Politics. “Republicans, especially, seem ready to take that risk.”
