After CNN’s Jake Tapper continued questioning Ben Carson for several minutes on Sunday concerning his views on why he does not believe a Muslim should be president, his manager decided to end the interview.
The CNN State of the Union interview came one week after Carson’s comments on NBC’s Meet the Press, where he explained why he would not advocate for a Muslim to be President of the United States.
As reported by Western Journalism, the candidate told Chuck Todd that he did not believe Islam was “consistent with the Constitution.”
“I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that,” Carson stated.
On Sunday, Tapper asked Carson nearly a dozen questions apparently trying to get the candidate to admit that he was engaging in unfair discrimination against Muslims because of his views.
“I would have problems with somebody who embraced all the doctrines associated with Islam,” Carson explained. He also stated he could support a Muslim under certain conditions. “If they are willing to reject sharia and all the portions of it that are talked about in the Quran — if they are willing to reject that, and subject that to American values and the Constitution, then of course, I would,” he said.
Tapper would not let the subject go. “You seem to be singling out Muslims as individuals who automatically, as a knee-jerk, would put their religion ahead of the country,” adding, “I think that offended a lot of people, including a lot of patriotic Muslims.”
“I’ve worked with Muslims. I’ve trained Muslims. I’ve operated on Muslims,” Carson responded. “There are a lot of Muslims who are very patriotic. Good Americans and they gladly admit, at least privately, that they don’t accept sharia or the doctrines and they understand that Islam is a system of living and it includes the way that you relate to the government,” he said.
“You’re an African-American. You know what it’s like for people to make false assumptions about you,” Tapper said. “And you seem to be doing the same thing with Muslims…You’re assuming that Muslim Americans put their religion ahead of the country.”
The candidate explained again that the problem with someone who embraces sharia law is that he or she would necessarily want to establish a “theocracy” in the United States, which would dictate how people worship God through their behavior. Carson added he would not support a Christian who did not understand that basic freedom of religion guaranteed by the Constitution.
“And you cannot, unless you specifically, deny that portion of Islam [sharia law] be a Muslim in good standing. Now if that is the case, if you are not willing to reject that, then how in the world can you possibly be the president of the United States,” he said.
After the candidate finished his answer, Carson’s business manager, Armstrong Williams, said off-camera, “This interview is over.”
The series of questions about Islam begins at minute 2:40.
