The U.S. Soccer Team could be haunted by the words of presidential candidate Donald Trump railing against Hispanic immigrants crossing the American border.
Trump’s words are being used by TV Azteca in an advertisement to pump up soccer fans in anticipation of the one-game showdown between the U.S. and Mexico in the 2015 Confederation Cup playoff on Oct. 10. TV Azteca, Mexico’s second largest broadcaster, is promoting its coverage of the game set for the Rose Bowl.
The ad shows images with sound bites from the leading Republican presidential candidate taken from his speeches regarding illegal immigration.
“When Mexico is sending us its people, it’s not sending their best,” Trump said, along with inserted images of U.S. Major Soccer League teams welcoming Mexican players they recruited.
Another image is of the Mexican team El Tri’s securing the Gold Cup victory over the United States in Philadelphia to Trump’s comments “Our country is in serious trouble. We don’t have victories anymore. The American Dream is dead.”
In reality, the U.S. has done well against its rival on the soccer field since 2000. It has a 13-5-5 head-to-head record in all competitions. However, the American team has fallen out of the top three competitors in the Gold Cup for the first time in 15 years. It also lost Sept. 7 exhibition against Brazil ending it with an embarrassing 4-1 score.
