On Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on continued federal funding for Planned Parenthood over its baby organ harvesting service as seen in a series of videos put out by the Center For Medical Progress. After several Democrats mistreated the abortion survivors who testified, Representative Trey Gowdy (R, SC) did what he does best by verbally destroying liberals and their anti-intellectual arguments.
Rep. Gowdy, who has said he’ll work to defund the abortion mill operator, had a series of questions that totally undermined the arguments in favor of abortion.
At one point the Congressman noted that determinations of when a child is “viable” are entirely arbitrary and said that such decisions are astoundingly unviable as legitimate reasoning to justify abortion.
In another case, Gowdy noted that the left often says that not many women in Congress support the anti-abortion side of the argument with the intimation that only women have a legitimate say on the issue of abortion. But, as Gowdy pointed out, it was an entire panel of men on the Supreme Court that originally came up with the Roe v Wade decision. He also pointed out that one of the pro-abortion supporters who testified before the hearing that day, Yale law professor Priscilla Smith, said that only doctors should make the determination of when an abortion is justified yet not only is she not a doctor, but the team who helped her write her policies are all lawyers and are also not doctors.
As for the Democrats, many of them proved to be unable to intellectually understand the important points before them on the issue. Democrat Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee comments consisted of his claim that support for Planned Parenthood is “in his DNA,” and that no thinking was required on his part.
Cohen also resorted to some odd name calling during his comments when he called a pro-life supporter “old” as if the man’s age somehow invalidated his testimony.
Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D, NY) also called the makers of the expose videos “liars in a long line of liars.”
Rep. Hank Johnson (D, GA) scolded the Republicans for putting stock in the expose videos put out by the Center For Medical Progress. Johnson claimed that the videos were “heavily edited” and said they were “worthless.” But when asked if he watched any of the videos to prove that he might know what he is talking about, he admitted that he never saw any of them. He was also uninformed about the fact that CMP had put the full, unedited videos online for anyone to watch, proving that their main point that PP was illegally selling organs and parts of murdered babies born alive were substantiated.
You might remember Rep. Johnson as the Congressman who was afraid that if the US Marines landed too many troops and trucks on the same beach in Guam that the island would capsize from the added weight.
As to those testifying, one woman who survived an abortion attempt gave a powerful presentation. Gianna Jensen, 38, asked “if abortion is about women’s rights, then what were mine?” Another woman, Melissa Ohden, said that she was glad she hadn’t become “just another statistic” and got to lead a full and vibrant life instead of being murdered in the womb.
Unfortunately, it is reported that most of the Democrat members of the committee didn’t even bother staying for the whole hearing.
