As in previous years, the coverage of Sunday’s Miss America contest included a question and answer round with the contestants. Judge Vanessa Williams asked one such headline-inducing question of finalist Hanna Robison when she broached the ongoing controversy over Planned Parenthood’s receipt of millions of taxpayer dollars each year. (See video below.)
In light of negative press surrounding undercover videos revealing offensive behavior by organization officials, Williams addressed Miss Tennessee:
Some federal legislatures are threatening to shut down the government over federal contributions to Planned Parenthood, even though no federal funds can be used for abortions. Should Planned Parenthood funding be cut off?
Robison responded by parroting a common talking point among Planned Parenthood defenders, insisting a large portion of its federal funding goes toward preventative care for women.
“I don’t think Planned Parenthood funding should be cut off,” she said. “The $500 million that gets given to Planned Parenthood every year goes to female care. It goes for scanning for cancer. It goes for mammograms. And, if we don’t give that funding to Planned Parenthood, those women will be out of health for reproductive causes.”
The exchange begins at roughly the 2:55 mark in the video below.
Robison’s message apparently resonated with a crowd that ushered her out of the spotlight with rousing applause. As a number of viewers asserted, however, her assertion is misleading.
Life News’ Steven Ertelt cited a recent investigation that concluded Planned Parenthood does not provide mammograms, nor do any of its facilities meet the legal requirements to do so.
Miss Tennessee’s talent: Finding a @PPact clinic that performs mammograms.

Ertelt wrote:
The truth is Planned Parenthood does not provide mammograms or breast biopsies or ultrasounds. They don’t help women catch cancer; instead they refer women to legitimate health centers that offer those services.
A number of social media users were upset by both the question and response.
Horrific answer by #MissTennessee. She falsely claimed that #PlannedParenthood performs mammograms. #MissAmerica — Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) September 14, 2015
@TwitchyTeam She may have known the truth, but she was trying to win a pageant. What a slanted, stupid question that was. — Susan Spencer Varela (@DramaticSu) September 14, 2015
Others, however, dismissed the question – if not the entire pageant – as inconsequential.
@TwitchyTeam No one tunes in to @MissAmericaOrg for political or advocacy views. No wonder their ratings suck. #DefundPP#MissAmerica — Fed Up American (@fremontdad) September 14, 2015
Though Robison’s answer earned significant backlash for its perceived inaccuracy, at least a few supporters were decidedly in her corner.
That time @MissAmericaTN FLAWLESSLY responded to a question about @PPact
