Pope Francis Thursday brought the Congress to a standing ovation when he said: “The Golden Rule also reminds us of our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development.”
On both sides of the aisle, Republicans and Democrats united to stand with the pope in support of his comments.
That unity is not always observed in Congress on abortion matters. In fact, the fight is just heating up over defunding Planned Parenthood and its clinics, which daily practice abortion and allegedly take part in the sale of aborted babies’ body parts.
Not standing in the ovation were U.S. Supreme Court justices, none of whom were serving as justices when Roe vs. Wade — the decision legalizing abortion — was passed. Since that 1973 decision, almost 55 million babies have been aborted.
The pope’s presence and comments on abortion come after much debate as to which party would stand to benefit from his address to Congress. The Republican Party has not wavered on its stance against abortion. Some suggest many Democrats – whose party has a history of supporting abortionists, abortion rights, partial-birth abortion, late term abortion, saline abortions, and the sale of body parts – might now be changing their minds on the brutality of abortion.
What do you think? In standing with the Republicans, are Democrats changing their views on abortion or seizing on an opportunity to politicize the Pope’s comments?
