A human could not have done better.
Siri, the virtual iPhone personal assistant, made a surprise appearance at a White House media briefing on Thursday. Siri responded to a question with a surprisingly timely answer, and turned the normally straight-faced room into a sea of smiling faces.
It began as a reporter was asking White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest about the Iran nuclear deal. The reporter wanted to know whether President Obama was upset that not one single Republican would support the treaty.
A familiar voice then filled the silence that followed the conclusion of the question.
“Sorry, I’m not sure what you want me to change,” answered Siri, as surprise gave way to laughter among the White House press corps, many of whom covered their faces as smiles replaced the usual stern faces.
“OK, I get it,” replied the reporter asking the question, holding his hands wide.
“That was on time,” a woman said in response to Siri’s answer.
When the laughter ended, the press corps and Earnest went back to business. Earnest offered a comment that Obama was disappointed the treaty became a partisan issue. Siri had no further comment.
No one in the room admitted to being the source of Siri’s unexpected appearance.
Later, press corps members were joking about whether Siri was speaking officially for the White House.
“Siri, are you a White House spokesperson?” tweeted POTUS Channel correspondent Jared Rizzi. “Does Siri make it into the transcript?”
