GOP candidates Ben Carson and Donald Trump got into a dust-up this week following comments the doctor made regarding The Donald’s faith.
At a campaign event on Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif., Carson responded to a reporter’s question asking him to differentiate himself from his fellow non-establishment candidate.
“I’ve realized where my success has come from and I don’t in any way deny my faith in God,” Carson said. “And I think that is the big difference.”
Carson also said he does not get the impression that faith is a major part of Trump’s life. “I haven’t seen it,” he said. The former neurosurgeon quoted one of his favorite Bible passages – Proverbs 22:4: “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life,” adding, “that’s a very big part of who I am. I don’t get that impression, maybe I’m wrong but I don’t get that,” said Carson.
Trump responded by tweeting:
Wow, I am ahead of the field with Evangelicals (am so proud of this) and virtually every other group, and Ben Carson just took a swipe at me

Earlier this month, Trump said of Carson, “I like Ben a lot. He’s a good guy,” but Carson’s remarks clearly stirred anger in the billionaire candidate. Appearing on CNN’s New Day on Thursday, Trump took a swipe at Carson’s low-key style. “He makes [Jeb] Bush look like the Energizer Bunny,” Trump said of his GOP rival.
He insisted he was only discussing Carson because “[h]e is questioning my faith. I happen to be a great believer in God and a great believer in the Bible.”
Trump continued: “But Ben Carson, you look at his faith and I think you’re not going to find so much. And you look at his views on abortion, which were horrendous.”
Trump next attacked Carson’s medical career, saying he was only an “OK doctor,” though Carson served as director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital and was the first man to surgically separate conjoined twins at the head.
“He was a doctor, perhaps an okay doctor, by the way,” Trump said. “You can check that out too… He was an okay doctor… and now because he’s a doctor and he hired one nurse he’s going to end up being the president of the United States?”
New Day host Chris Cuomo appeared stunned by Trump’s line of attack.
“I don’t know about ‘okay doctor.’ You know, he was the first man to separate conjoined twins,” he responded.
Carson told The Washington Post on Thursday he is not interested in continuing the back and forth with Trump. “The media frequently wants to goad people into wars, into gladiator fights, you know,” he said. “And I’m certainly not going to get into that.”
“Everyone is going to be saying, ‘Oh there’s a big fight, everyone come watch the fight,’” he added. “But it’s just not going to be as great as they think, because I’m not going to participate.”
Carson also appeared to seek reconciliation, saying he was not trying to personally go after Trump. “I would like to say to him that the intention was not to talk to him but about what motivates me,” he said regarding his religion comment. “If he took that as a personal attack on him, I apologize, it was certainly not the intent.”
Trump has not been shy about expressing how he feels about other GOP candidates, including Jeb Bush, Carly Fiorina and Scott Walker.
A CNN/ORC poll released Thursday finds Trump at 32 percent support among voters, followed by Carson at 19 percent and Bush at 9 percent.
