Presidential candidate Donald Trump is once again taking criticism for a comment he made about a woman. This time it is his GOP rival Carly Fiorina.
A Rolling Stone article published Wednesday quoted the billionaire candidate:
“Look at that face!” Trump said while watching campaign news coverage with his staff. “Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?!“
“I mean, she’s a woman, and I’m not s’posedta say bad things, but really, folks, come on. Are we serious?” Trump continued, according to the Stone’s Paul Solotaroff, who was with Trump on board the candidate’s plane.
To be fair, Solotaroff also reported that Trump did not limit his comments to Fiorina. When Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker appeared on screen immediately proceeding Fiorina and was praised by the news anchor for his “slow but steady” style, Trump chimed in: “Yeah, he’s slow, all right! That’s what we got already: slowwww.” His staffers hooted and howled, but he was just getting warmed up.
Trump explained his remarks regarding Fiorina while on CNN Thursday morning, telling New Day host Chris Cuomo, “Probably I did say something like that about Carly.” He said the comments were made in a “jocular manner” and he was talking about her “persona,” not her looks.
The GOP candidate went on to question Fiorina’s ability to lead, saying, “She goes down as one of the worst (CEOs) ever,” referring to her time as head of Hewlett-Packard. He told Cuomo she was fired from the position.
CNN reports that Fiorina’s record is, in fact, mixed:
Fiorina laid off 30,000 employees during her time as HP’s CEO and the company’s stock value was nearly halved during her time as CEO during a controversial merger with Compaq that she led. The company’s stock value rose after Fiorina was fired.
Fiorina has often said on the campaign trail that she lost her job in a “boardroom brawl” and has defended the mass firings.
The company did double its revenue during her time as CEO, largely because of the merger.
Fiorina responded to Trump’s remarks while talking to Megyn Kelly on Fox News’ The Kelly File Wednesday night. “Well, I think those comments speak for themselves,” Fiorina said. “Honestly, Megyn, I’m not going to spend a single cycle wondering what Donald Trump means.” The candidate then added, “Maybe — just maybe — I’m getting under his skin a little bit, because I am climbing in the polls.”
You can watch her interview on The Kelly File below:
Kelly countered, saying it was not just O’Donnell, which Trump conceded was true. In the days following the debate, he explained that many of his past controversial remarks about women were made in a joking manner in settings like shock jock Howard Stern’s radio program.
