(Before It's News)

American-led forces lit up the Iraqi sky like the Fourth of July during attacks on an Islamic State weapons cache in Ramadi, a key city 70 miles west of Baghdad.

Video of the attack shows an initial explosion as American jets hit the target, a stadium, then massive secondary explosions as the contents of the weapons ISIS had stored in the stadium ignite and turn the night bright. U.S. Central Command reported that the stadium held “homemade explosives, weapons and ammunition as well as VBIED (Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device) components.”

ISIS “used the stadium as a base of operations to control fighters across the Ramadi region, and as a central node for lethal aid funneled down the Euphrates River Valley,” said a statement from U.S. Central Command.

Destroying the massive weapons depot will “significantly disrupt” the ability of ISIS ” to conduct operations and resupply their fighters in Ramadi.”

The strikes were conducted on Tuesday in coordination with the Iraqi government as part of a strategy of tightening the noose around ISIS fighters, the Combined Joint Task Force said in a statement.

“Destroying this facility enables Iraqi security forces activities in and around Ramadi while degrading (ISIS) command and control capability throughout the area,” said Army Col. Michael Indovina, a CJTF spokesman, also announcing that the strike in Ramadi came amid 17 other strikes against targets in Iraq and Syria.

ISIS seized Ramadi on May 17. Iraqi troops, backed by Shi’ite militias, Sunni tribal fighters and U.S.-led coalition air strikes, have been trying to encircle Islamic State militants in Ramadi before trying to retake the city, the Pentagon said last month. On Thursday, the Iraqi government was reporting that Iraqi forces had begun re-taking areas near the city.
