It’s been a good month for Fox News Channel. The conservative-leaning news channel remained in the top spot for cable prime-time for five straight weeks. If this trend continues, it could mean the longest running top ranking streak for the cable news channel.
Ratings numbers show that 1.86 million viewers watched Fox in prime-time, which happened while other high-profile events were on other channels. ESPN was featuring the U.S. Open, but Fox edged it out at night. Fox came in second to Nickelodeon during the day.
Other cable news networks didn’t fare well during the same time period. CNN, the main competitor to Fox, ranked at 37 and MSNBC took the 24th spot in rankings. Other top cable networks include ESPN, which had 1.77 million viewers on average, the Disney Channel, boasting of 1.53 million viewers, and the USA network with 1.452 million viewers. HGTV also scored with 1.448 million viewers.
The big three network newscasts still had more overall viewers than any of the cable networks. The Nightly News on NBC had 8.3 million viewers while ABC’s World News Tonight had 7.7 million viewers. The CBS Evening News had 6.5 million viewers during the same time period.
Fox lured about 24 million viewers when it hosted the highly publicized first Republican presidential debate in August. It has also garnered attention for the feud between presidential candidate Donald Trump and Fox anchor and debate moderator Megyn Kelly.
Fox’s recent primetime ratings have only been matched once before in its 18 years on the air. The network enjoyed a top prime-time spot from March 17 until April 20 in 2003 when it was covering the Iraq War.

Well, even though I can’t stand Shepard Smith, Fox is the only national channel that does hard news during the day, saving the editorial programs for night time. CNN, MSNBC, etc. don’t do hard news anymore at all, they are 24/7 editorial opinion television.
I ditched cable years ago, I prefer to watch my local news over the air. When I rarely tune into Fox News, I stream it online for free. http://www.squidtv.net/
Radio has always been a primary source of news for me and still is, especially in the car. Although, I depend on instant news on my smartphone more and more these days….sigh. I get all the newspapers I used to pay for free now, digitally, haven’t picked up a physical paper in years.
