Donald Trump spoke about his plan for deporting illegal immigrants from the country at the Republican debate on Tuesday, saying that it was modeled after a program of President Dwight Eisenhower.
Trump said:
“People liked him. I like Ike. [That’s the] expression. ‘I like Ike.’ Moved a million and a half illegal immigrants out of this country, moved them just beyond the border: They came back. Moved them again, beyond the border: They came back. Moved them again, beyond the border: they came back. Then moved them way south. They never came back.”
Presidential candidate Ben Carson has now spoken out against Trump’s plan, saying that it is “not pragmatic.”
Carson told the Washington Examiner his thoughts on Trump’s deportation plans: “I think they hurt Donald Trump in the long run. I think there are enough people who know that there are others in the race that are very reasonable. I don’t think he necessarily is the representation of the Republican Party- far from it.”
After Carson said “it’s not pragmatic” he added, “It also affects the farming industry, the hospitality industry. So, you know, we have to be pragmatic as a nation. There’s no reason that they should have to live in the shadows.”
Carson also said that illegal immigrants that have a “pristine record” should be able to stay in the United States as guest workers.
Furthermore, Carson spoke about the possibility of some illegal immigrants eventually becoming U.S. citizens. He stated: “If a majority of Americans say,’it really doesn’t offend my sense of justice, and yes, we actually want these people to become citizens,’ I would listen, because this country is of, for, and by the people-not of, for, and by the government.”
