With Dr. Ben Carson recently gaining on Donald Trump in the polls, the real estate mogul has been going after Carson on the campaign trail. However, Trump has made a pledge about how he will treat Carson at the next debate that is surprising many.
Those who have followed Trump may have been assuming that Trump will take aim mainly at the other candidate who has been threatening his frontrunner status in the poll numbers. But in an interview with ABC, Trump dismissed the idea that he was going to target Dr. Carson on Tuesday night.
On Good Morning America, host George Stephanopoulos opened his phone interview pressing Trump on what he intends to do during the upcoming debate, especially regarding Carson. Trump said he doesn’t intend to attack Carson.
“No, not at all,” Trump said on Tuesday. “We’ll see what happens. It’ll be loose, we’ll be very flexible. I have no idea what’s going to happen, but it’ll be interesting.”
ABC’s questions come on the heels of a week of attacks from the main stream establishment on various aspects of Dr. Carson’s biography, especially his violence-prone youth.
The GOP frontrunner did note that the whole situation with Carson’s claims is a “strange situation” and that perhaps these questions might make voters think twice about voting for Carson.
“You know, I’m trying to figure out what’s going on over here, you hit somebody in the face with a lock, you go after your mother with a hammer, and you’re trying to justify that yes you did them, and that’s supposed to make you credible,” Trump said.
Stephanopoulos asked Trump about polls showing that Carson is gaining on him, but the businessman dismissed them saying that only a few polls show Carson gaining, and most show Trump still firmly in the lead.
Trump also noted that polls show that in a head-to-head contest between him and Hillary Clinton, he easily beats the former secretary of state.
The next GOP debate is scheduled for November 10 on Fox Business Network.
